The Giffnock Open
Giffnock was the place to be last week when open Tennis competitions were held for both juniors and seniors at Giffnock Tennis Club.
There were over 240 entrants to the junior events for boys and girls and over 40 entries for the senior gents matches that took place on Thursday and Friday.
Past President Jim Kerr said “It was truly an open competition
as we had entrants from all over Scotland (eg Aberdeen, Fife and Edinburgh)
and also a large number of entrants from England. In fact, a bit
disappointingly, over half of the winners were from England.”
“This has been the third year that we have held this and it has become
a major event in the UK tennis calendar. Such had been the demand we
had to ask nearby Whitecraigs Tennis Club to allow some matches to be played
there and they were happy to help us out.”
Kerr said that Giffnock’s former coach Colin Hanbidge has been a big supporter of the event and although he had moved to the Isle of Man, he had agreed to return to referee the event and he was impressed by the standard of the play.
The star player of the seniors’ events was Giffnock’s own Owen Hadden. He won both the singles and doubles title playing both semi finals and finals for both events on Friday night. In the singles final Hadden beat Nicolas Rosensweig from Dundee 6-1,3-6, 7-5.
In the doubles final Hadden was partnered by another Giffnock player Neil McPhee with them beating teenagers Robbie Price and his Prestwick partner Kester Black 6-2, 6-1.
Hadden is quite an all rounder as he is also the Club’s squash champion as well as playing hockey for the club.
In the junior events the older age group events (u14, u16, u18) were
all won by boys and girls from England although Fiona Burnett from Helensbugh
was victorious in the girls under 12s beating Meghan Montgomerie from
Ayshire 6-4 , 6-2 in the final. In the under 10 group Tom Lonergan from
Newlands was the winner following in the footsteps of his brother Charlie
who last year won the under 10 event. Perhaps these Lonergan brothers
will be the names to follow brothers Andy & Jamie Murray in a few
years.
