Tennis
Despite many layers and rainjackets being compulsory, there has been
good success in Giffnock’s winter tennis programme.
Alan Mackin and I have
been working with the performance players in their squads on Tuesdays and
Thursdays and hope that the players’ hard work in training can be rewarded
in matches in many upcoming tournaments.
Mini Tennis
The autumn mini-tennis programme has been successful in a number of ways.
The Saturday outdoor programme was enjoyed by many, with over 25 players
attending regularly each week. The Wednesday classes, firstly at club and
latterly at the Maccabi centre, reached full capacity with 30 players attending.
The next block starts week beginning 7th January, with the Maccabi centre
expected to fill up fast, so get your application forms in now to avoid
missing out. For more information, contact Chris Rose on 07745 227 269.
Matches
Furthermore, the mini-red, orange and green teams have enjoyed much success
in their team matches, and with over 10 mini-red players making their match
debuts this autumn, it is particularly satisfying for the coaches to see
a high number of players competing and therefore gaining valuable match
experience.
It is hoped though that the next block will see an increase
in the number attending the mini-tennis matchplay sessions on a Sunday
(Red 2-3pm/Orange 3-4pm). These classes are most beneficial and very enjoyable,
as players learn about the rules of tennis through playing matches.
New Year
The coaches plan to extend the programme by delivering performance sessions
to our most promising mini-red players (invite only) and offering mini-orange
(age 8-9) club sessions starting in January. A reminder that Saturday and
Sunday coaching sessions are free to members and the coaches would encourage
that you take advantage of this.
Alan Mackin has settled very well into his new role as Giffnock Performance
Coach having just come off the professional tour. He has enjoyed working
with our junior players and they have gained immensely from his invaluable
experience of playing at the highest level.
Alan looks forward to his
involvement with senior members which starts with ladies and gents team training
at the slightly earlier time in the New Year of late January.
I would urge
as many of you as possible to take advantage of the opportunity to attend
these FREE sessions as Giffnock look to launch another successful season
in the West leagues.
