2009 ANNUAL TENNIS REPORT
Seniors
It was another hugely successful season for our Gents 1st team. They retained
the West premier league title and defended the prestigious Scottish Cup
to win 2nd year running. Great effort boys and thanks to the support from
club members that the team got particularly everyone who made their way
to Edinburgh to support the boys in the Scottish Cup final.
Gents 2nd team gents finished a close in their league Division 1A. Great
effort boys and thanks to new captain Paul Gallagher who kept the team
together well. The Gents 3rd team had a tough year in terms of availability
of players with some untimely weddings! And injuries but still managed
a respectable mid-table finish in division 1B and can only be good the
fact they managed to get some of our most promising youngsters involved
playing in the team this year.
A superb year for our young Gents 4th team
culminated in them topping their league division 3A. Good luck to captain
and club assistant coach Chris Rose and his team for next years season
when the standard goes up. Giffnock 5th team finished an excellent 3rd
in their respective league division 5B. Special thanks to Duncan Campbell
for his efforts in his very organised team captaincy.
Our ladies 1st team just missed out on promotion finishing 2nd in their
league, division 1B. It is unfortunate only one gets promotion. They only
lost one match which was against the league winners. Thank you to captain
Gillian Armstrong who struggled to get the same team out every week due
to player availability so well done in your handling of the team.
Our ladies
2nd team finished 4th in division 2A in a tightly contested league. Thank
you to their new captain Liz Hanlon for the running of that team. Ladies
3rd team finished 3rd in division 3B well done them an improvement on last
years league position finish. Or ladies 4th team finished 4th in division
4B, they actually lost one less matches than two of the three teams above
them but were unlucky when it game to picking up high match wins.
Unfortunately
our 5th team were relegated from division 5A. It was a difficult year for
Janice and her team again the difficultly was not getting the same team
out on a regular basis but on the plus side some of our junior got an experience
of playing and that bodes well for the team bouncing back next year.
Thank you to all team captains and I hope many of you are going to stay
on and captain the teams again in 2010.
Juniors
As ever our junior players do their club and me very proud. Our strength
and depth across our junior members is ever improving due to our successful
coaching programme and endeavour of the kids to practice. Due to this strength
we had two extra junior teams entered into the leagues this year. Our boys
U18 have finished fourth in their group. Our U16 boys 1st team won division
2A and as evidence of strength and depth the 2nd team won their division
3A. Our boys U14 came 2nd in division 1 in a close league. Our U14 boys
2nd team came 2nd in division 2B. Our boys U12 1st team came joint top
of division 1 harshly loosing out on games won count. Our 2nd team easily
won their division never really been tested in the fact they did not concede
any points what so ever. Our boys 10 and under came 3rd in the ‘Nadal’ group
and our 9 and under mini orange players finished mid-table. It was a successful
year for the girls with the Under 16 team winning their league and the
U12’s winning theirs also. The U14’s finished mid-table and
10 and Under Girls finished 3rd. A Big thank you and well done to all team
players involved and massive thanks on behalf of myself and club to the
parents involved in captaining the teams and transporting our players around
the West for their matches.

Mini-Tennis (5-8 yrs)
Giffnock is one of few clubs to offer specialist mini tennis courts. The
smaller court size and net height contribute to a positive learning experience
for the young player. On Wednesdays, Giffnock provides coaching to members
and non-members. There are two mini-red classes 4-5pm for 5-6 years and
5-6 pm for 7-8 years. These are currently happening at the nearby indoor
venue of St Ninians high school. Another block will run from January
next year until Easter when the sessions will move back outside to the
club. For more information or get your child involved please contact Nick
or Chris. Saturdays are for members only 2-3 pm for 5-6 yrs and 3-4 pm
for 7-8 yrs. These classes will be starting up again on 8th February 2009.
The combination of qualified tennis coaching staff and excellent facilities
makes Giffnock the ideal club to start playing tennis.
CLUBMARK
Giffnock is one of only a few clubs in Scotland to have just been accredited
with tennis Clubmark:
Tennis Clubmark is a club’s opportunity to be recognised for achieving
excellent standards. All types of tennis club, with a junior section, are
eligible to apply, including traditional tennis clubs, school clubs, tennis
programmes based in parks, and those working within the commercial sector.
Achieving Tennis Clubmark means the LTA endorses and supports a club’s
tennis programme, policies and procedures, action and development planning,
and club management.
The benefits of achieving Tennis Clubmark:
-
Recognition for the tennis programmes your club is delivering, and endorsement from the LTA
-
Recognition by Sport England, through a well known national scheme that spans across a number of sports
-
Eligibility to receive LTA funding (includes facility grants and loans and programme funding through HPCs and Satellite clubs)
-
Be advertised on the national Clubmark website and the LTA website
-
Ability to develop partnerships at a local level - many schools and school sport partnerships are requiring that the clubs they work with must have Tennis Clubmark
-

-
Be able to use the Tennis Clubmark logo on your clubs literature
